[PIO] Ministry of Health announcement on new cases of COVID-19 - 28 January 2022

The Ministry of Health announces that today, 28 January 2022:

- 2 deaths were announced from COVID-19, bringing the total number of deaths to 726.

- 208 COVID-19 patients are hospitalized, of which 68 are in serious condition. A proportion of 76.45% of hospitalized patients have no history of vaccination.

- 20 post-COVID patients who ceased to be infectious (declassified cases) continue to be hospitalized intubated in serious condition due to COVID in an ICU.

- A total of 110,201 tests have been performed to detect the disease by the molecular method (PCR) and the antigen rapid test.

- 2,587 (positivity rate: 2.35%) new cases of COVID-19 have been detected by the PCR and antigen rapid tests, bringing the total number of cases to 248,941.

Here are today's results in detail.

A. Deaths from COVID-19:

The 2 deaths announced with the final cause of death attributed to COVID-19 are:

- Male, aged 74 years, who died on 27 January at Larnaca General Hospital;

- Male, aged 93 years, who died on 28 January at Nicosia General Hospital.

Therefore, the total number of deaths with the final cause of COVID-19 is 726, of which:

- 452 males (62.3%), and

- 274 females (37.7%).

The average age of those who died from the disease is 76.2 years.

B. Inpatients:

In total, 208 patients with COVID-19 are hospitalized in the hospitals of the OCYPY, of which 68 are in serious condition or in PICU.

Of the 68 patients in serious condition, 30 are intubated, 3 are in an Intensive Care Unit (ICU) off ventilator and 35 are in an Intensive Care Unit (ICU).

C. Positive cases COVID-19 (PCR test and antigen rapid test):

Of the 110,201 diagnoses performed, 5,748 were performed by the molecular method (PCR) and 104,453 by the antigen rapid test, 2,587 cases of COVID-19 were identified, resulting in the following:

  1. 59 cases from 564 samples obtained through the contact tracing procedure of already confirmed cases.
  2. 47 cases out of 2,189 samples taken during passenger screening at Larnaca and Paphos Airports.
  3. 302 cases out of 2,482 samples taken through private initiative.
  4. 36 cases out of 356 samples taken by the Microbiological Laboratories of General Hospitals.
  5. 1,371 cases from 49,512 samples tested by the antigen rapid test in private clinical laboratories and pharmacies.
  6. 769 cases out of 54,941 samples tested by the antigen rapid test through the Ministry of Health programme.
  7. 3 cases from 157 specimens obtained under the programme of referrals by Personal Physicians and screening of special groups through the Public Health Clinics.
