[PIO] Ministry of Health announcement on new cases of COVID-19 - 26 January 2022

The Ministry of Health announces that today, 26 January 2022:

- 8 deaths were announced from COVID-19, bringing the total number of deaths to 724.

- 224 COVID-19 patients are hospitalized, of which 75 are in serious condition. 75% of those hospitalized have no history of vaccination.

- 19 post-COVID patients who have ceased to be infectious (declassified cases) continue to be hospitalized intubated in serious condition due to COVID in an ICU.

- A total of 92,276 tests have been performed to detect the disease by the molecular method (PCR) and the antigen rapid test.

- 2,499 (positivity rate: 2.71%) new cases of COVID-19 have been detected by the PCR and antigen rapid tests, bringing the total number of cases to 243,818.

Here are today's results in detail.

A. Deaths from COVID-19:

The 8 deaths announced with the final cause of death attributed to COVID-19 are:

- Male, aged 72 years, who died on 23 January in the Intensive Care Unit of Nicosia General Hospital;

- Female, aged 88 years, who died on 25 January in Limassol General Hospital.

- Female, aged 91, who died on 25 January at Limassol General Hospital.

- Female, aged 83, who died on 26 January at Larnaca General Hospital.

- Male, aged 86, who died on 26 January at Famagusta General Hospital.

- Male, aged 86, who died on 26 January at Famagusta General Hospital.

- Female, aged 85, who died on 26 January at Nicosia General Hospital.

- Female, aged 81, who died on 26 January at Famagusta General Hospital.

- Female, aged 64, who died on 26 January at the Intensive Care Unit of Nicosia General Hospital.

- Female, aged 64, who died on 26 January at the Intensive Care Unit of Nicosia General Hospital.

Therefore, the total number of deaths with the final cause of COVID-19 is 724, of which:

- 450 males (62.2%), and

- 274 females (37.8%).

The average age of those who died from the disease is 76.2 years.

B. Inpatients:

In total, 224 patients with COVID-19 are hospitalized in the inpatient units of the OCYPY, of which 75 are in serious condition or in PICU.

Of the 75 patients in serious condition, 34 are intubated, 4 are hospitalized in an Intensive Care Unit outside of a ventilator and 37 are in an Intensive Care Unit.

C. Positive cases COVID-19 (PCR test and rapid antigen test):

Of the 92,276 diagnoses performed, 5,190 were made by the molecular method (PCR) and 87,086 by the antigen rapid test method, 2499 cases of COVID-19 were identified, resulting in the following:

  1. 64 cases from 411 samples obtained through the contact tracing procedure of already confirmed cases.
  2. 21 cases out of 921 samples taken during passenger screening at Larnaca and Paphos Airports.
  3. 360 cases out of 3,343 samples taken through private initiative.
  4. 45 cases out of 279 samples taken by the Microbiological Laboratories of General Hospitals.
  5. 1,158 cases from 47,918 samples tested by the antigen rapid test in private clinical laboratories and pharmacies.
  6. 837 cases out of 39,168 samples tested by the antigen rapid test through the Ministry of Health programme.
  7. 14 cases from 234 specimens obtained under the programme of referrals by Personal Physicians and screening of special groups through the Public Health Clinics.

In addition, the following investigations were carried out without detecting a case:

  1. 0 cases from 2 samples taken in the framework of audits in closed structures.
