[PIO] Ministry of Health announcement on new cases of COVID-19 - 20 January 2022

The Ministry of Health announces that today, 20 January 2022:

- 11 deaths were announced with COVID-19 as the final cause, bringing the total number of deaths to 700.

- 244 COVID-19 patients are hospitalized, of which 81 are in serious condition. A proportion of 72.55% of hospitalized patients have no history of vaccination.

- 18 post-COVID patients who ceased to be infectious (declassified cases) continue to be hospitalized intubated in serious condition due to COVID in an ICU.

- A total of 108,670 tests have been performed to detect the disease by the molecular method (PCR) and the antigen rapid test.

- 2,282 (positivity rate: 2.1%) new cases of COVID-19 have been detected by the PCR and antigen rapid tests, bringing the total number of cases to 235,364.

Here are today's results in detail.

A. Deaths from COVID-19:

The 11 deaths announced with the final cause of death attributed to COVID-19 are:

- A woman, aged 65 years, who died on 1 January in the Intensive Care Unit of Nicosia General Hospital;

- A man, aged 71 years, who died on 8 January in Nicosia General Hospital.

- A man, aged 70, who died on 10 January in the Intensive Care Unit of Nicosia General Hospital.

- A man, aged 70, who died on 11 January in the Intensive Care Unit of Nicosia General Hospital.

- A man, aged 70, who died on 11 January in the Intensive Care Unit of Nicosia General Hospital.

- Woman, aged 85, who died on 18 January at Larnaca General Hospital.

- Man, aged 73, who died on 19 January at the Intensive Care Unit of Nicosia General Hospital.

- Woman, 83 years old, who died on January 19 at Larnaca General Hospital.

- Man, 63 years old, who died on January 19 at the Intensive Care Unit of Nicosia General Hospital.

- Woman, 65 years old, who died on January 20 at the Intensive Care Unit of Nicosia General Hospital.

- Woman, 65 years old, who died on January 20 at the Intensive Care Unit of Nicosia General Hospital.

- Woman, aged 79, who died on 20 January at Limassol General Hospital.

- Man, aged 87, who died on 20 January at Limassol General Hospital.

- Man, aged 87, who died on 20 January at Limassol General Hospital.

Therefore, the total number of deaths with the final cause of COVID-19 is 700, of which:

- 440 males (62.9%), and

- 260 females (37.1%).

The average age of those who died from the disease is 76 years.

B. Inpatients:

In total, 244 patients with COVID-19 are hospitalized in the hospitals of the OCYPY, of which 81 are in serious condition or in PICU.

Of the 81 patients in serious condition, 34 are intubated, 3 are hospitalized in an Intensive Care Unit outside of a ventilator, and 44 are in an Intensive Care Unit.

C. Positive cases COVID-19 (PCR test and rapid antigen test):

Of the 108,670 diagnoses performed, 6,547 were made by the molecular method (PCR) and 102,123 by the antigen rapid test method, 2282 cases of COVID-19 were identified, resulting in the following:

  1. 70 cases from 821 samples obtained through the contact tracing procedure of already confirmed cases.
  2. 50 cases from 2,321 samples taken during passenger screening at Larnaca and Paphos Airports.
  3. 307 cases out of 2,980 samples taken through private initiative.
  4. 29 cases out of 317 samples taken by the Microbiological Laboratories of General Hospitals.
  5. 1,144 cases from 49,047 samples tested by the antigen rapid test in private clinical laboratories and pharmacies.
  6. 678 cases out of 53,076 specimens tested by the antigen rapid test through the Ministry of Health programme.
  7. 4 cases from 107 specimens obtained under the Personal Physician Referral and Special Group Screening Program through the Public Health Clinics.

In addition, the following examinations were carried out without detecting a case:

  1. 0 cases from 1 sample taken in the framework of audits in closed structures.
