The Ministry of Health announces that today, 2 January 2022:
- 1 person died from COVID-19, bringing the total number of deaths to 639.
- 203 COVID-19 patients are hospitalized, of which 84 are in serious condition. A proportion of 83.26% of hospitalized patients have no history of vaccination.
- 16 post-COVID patients who ceased to be infectious (declassified cases) continue to be hospitalized intubated in serious condition due to COVID in an ICU.
- A total of 91,482 tests have been performed to detect the disease by the molecular method (PCR) and the antigen rapid test.
- 3,538 (positivity rate: 3.87% new cases of COVID-19 have been detected by the PCR and antigen rapid tests, bringing the total number of cases to 172,697.
Here are today's results in detail.
A. Deaths from COVID-19:
The 1 person who died with the final cause of death attributed to COVID-19 was:
- A woman, aged 85 years, who died on 2 January at Larnaca General Hospital.
Therefore, the total number of deaths with the final cause of COVID-19 is 639, of which:
- 405 males (63.4%), and
- 234 females (36.6%).
The average age of those who died from the disease is 76 years.
B. Inpatients:
In total, 203 patients with COVID-19 are hospitalized in the hospitals of the OCYPY, of which 84 are in serious condition or in PICU.
Of the 84 patients in serious condition, 33 are intubated, 5 are hospitalized in an Intensive Care Unit outside of a ventilator and 46 are in an Intensive Care Unit.

C. Positive cases COVID-19 (PCR test and rapid antigen test):
Of the 91,482 diagnoses performed, 7,912 were made by the molecular method (PCR) and 83,570 by the antigen rapid test method, 3538 cases of COVID-19 were identified, resulting in the following:
- 68 cases from 456 samples obtained through the contact tracing procedure of already confirmed cases.
- 58 cases from 3,915 samples taken during passenger screening at Larnaca and Paphos Airports.
- 362 cases out of 3,198 samples taken through private initiative.
- 22 cases out of 291 samples taken by the Microbiological Laboratories of General Hospitals.
- 1816 cases from 45,456 samples tested by the antigen rapid test in private clinical laboratories and pharmacies.
- 1209 cases from 38,114 samples tested by the antigen rapid test through the Ministry of Health programme.
- 3 cases from 52 samples taken under the programme of referrals by Personal Physicians and screening of special groups through the Public Health Clinics.
