[PIO] Ministry of Health announcement on new cases of COVID-19 - 2 February 2022

The Ministry of Health announces that today, 2 February 2022:

- 2 deaths were announced from COVID-19, bringing the total number of deaths to 736.

- 235 COVID-19 patients are hospitalized, of which 67 are in serious condition. A proportion of 74.9% of hospitalized patients have no history of vaccination.

- 20 post-COVID patients who ceased to be infectious (declassified cases) continue to be hospitalized intubated in serious condition due to COVID in an ICU.

- A total of 100,762 tests have been performed to detect the disease by the molecular method (PCR) and the antigen rapid test.

- 3,083 (positivity rate: 3.06%) new cases of COVID-19 have been detected by the PCR and antigen rapid tests, bringing the total number of cases to 262,867.

Here are today's results in detail.

A. Deaths from COVID-19:

The 2 deaths announced with the final cause of death attributed to COVID-19 relate to:

- Male, aged 74 years, who died on 1 February in the Intensive Care Unit of Nicosia General Hospital.

- A man, aged 74 years, who died on 2 February at Limassol General Hospital.

Therefore, the total number of deaths with the final cause of COVID-19 is 736, of which:

- 460 males (62.5%), and

- 276 females (37.5%).

The average age of those who died from the disease is 76.3 years.

B. Inpatients:

In total, 235 patients with COVID-19 are hospitalized in the hospitals of the OCYPY, of which 67 are in serious condition or in PICU.

Of the 67 patients in serious condition, 28 are intubated, 6 are hospitalized in an Intensive Care Unit outside of a ventilator and 33 in an Intensive Care Unit.

C. Positive cases COVID-19 (PCR test and antigen rapid test):

Of the 100,762 diagnoses performed, 5,435 were performed by the molecular method (PCR) and 95,327 by the antigen rapid test method, 3083 cases of COVID-19 were identified, resulting in the following:

  1. 105 cases from 659 samples obtained through the contact tracing procedure of already confirmed cases.
  2. 41 cases out of 1,982 samples taken during passenger screening at Larnaca and Paphos Airports.
  3. 327 cases out of 2,299 samples taken through private initiative.
  4. 39 cases out of 307 samples taken by the Microbiological Laboratories of General Hospitals.
  5. 1,492 cases from 49,569 samples tested by the antigen rapid test in private clinical laboratories and pharmacies.
  6. 1,076 cases out of 45,758 samples tested by the antigen rapid test through the Ministry of Health programme.
  7. 3 cases from 188 specimens obtained under the programme of referrals by Personal Physicians and screening of special groups through the Public Health Clinics.
