The Ministry of Health announces that today, 15 January 2022:
- 1 person died from COVID-19, bringing the total number of deaths to 673.
- 270 COVID-19 patients are hospitalized, of which 88 are in serious condition. A proportion of 74.08% of hospitalized patients have no history of vaccination.
- 20 post-COVID patients who have ceased to be infectious (declassified cases) continue to be hospitalized intubated in serious condition due to COVID in an ICU.
- A total of 95,740 tests have been performed to detect the disease by the molecular method (PCR) and the antigen rapid test.
- 2,351 (positivity rate: 2.46%) new cases of COVID-19 have been detected by the PCR and antigen rapid tests, bringing the total number of cases to 223,767.
Here are today's results in detail.
A. Deaths from COVID-19:
The 1 person who died with the final cause of death attributed to COVID-19 was:
- A male, aged 88 years, who died on 14 January at Limassol General Hospital.
Therefore, the total number of deaths with the final cause of COVID-19 is 673, of which:
- 423 males (62.9%), and
- 250 females (37.1%).
The average age of those who died from the disease is 75.9 years.
B. Inpatients:
In total, 270 patients with COVID-19 are hospitalized in the hospitals of the OCYPY, of which 88 are in serious condition or in PICU.
Of the 88 patients in serious condition, 28 are intubated, 4 are hospitalized in an Intensive Care Unit outside of a ventilator and 56 in an Intensive Care Unit.

C. Positive cases COVID-19 (PCR test and rapid antigen test):
Of the 95,740 diagnoses performed, 9,371 were performed by the molecular method (PCR) and 86,369 by the antigen rapid test method, 2351 cases of COVID-19 were identified, resulting in the following:
- 178 cases from 1,856 samples obtained through the contact tracing procedure of already confirmed cases.
- 42 cases out of 2,641 samples taken during passenger screening at Larnaca and Paphos Airports.
- 377 cases out of 4,395 samples taken through private initiative.
- 34 cases out of 307 samples taken by the Microbiological Laboratories of General Hospitals.
- 971 cases from 49,505 samples tested by the antigen rapid test in private clinical laboratories and pharmacies.
- 747 cases out of 36,864 samples tested by the antigen rapid test through the Ministry of Health programme.
- 2 cases from 172 specimens obtained under the programme of referrals by Personal Physicians and screening of special groups through the Public Health Clinics.
