[PIO] Ministry of Health announcement on new cases of COVID-19 - 13 January 2022

The Ministry of Health announces that today, 13 January 2022:

- 3 people died from COVID-19, bringing the total number of deaths to 672.

- 259 COVID-19 patients are hospitalized, of whom 87 are in serious condition. A proportion of 74.91% of hospitalized patients have no history of vaccination.

- 18 post-COVID patients who ceased to be infectious (declassified cases) continue to be hospitalized intubated in serious condition due to COVID in an ICU.

- A total of 122,016 tests have been performed to detect the disease by the molecular method (PCR) and the antigen rapid test.

- 3,103 (positivity rate: 2.54%) new cases of COVID-19 have been detected by the PCR and antigen rapid tests, bringing the total number of cases to 218,374.

Here are today's results in detail.

A. Deaths from COVID-19:

The 3 persons who died with the final cause of death attributed to COVID-19 were:

- Male, aged 86 years, who died on 13 January at Limassol General Hospital

- Male, aged 89 years, who died on 13 January at Larnaca General Hospital.

- Male, aged 89 years, who died on 13 January at Larnaca General Hospital.

- A man, aged 86, who died on 12 January at Famagusta General Hospital.

Consequently, the total number of deaths with the final cause of COVID-19 is 672, of which:

- 422 men (62.8%), and

- 250 women (37.2%).

The average age of those who died from the disease is 76 years.

B. Inpatients:

In total, 259 patients with COVID-19 are hospitalized in the hospitals of the OCYPY, of which 87 are in serious condition or in PICU.

Of the 87 patients in serious condition, 29 are intubated, 4 are hospitalized in an Intensive Care Unit (ICU) off ventilator and 54 in an Intensive Care Unit (ICU).

C. Positive cases COVID-19 (PCR test and antigen rapid test):

Of the 122,016 diagnoses performed, 6,671 were performed by the molecular method (PCR) and 115,345 by the antigen rapid test method, 3103 cases of COVID-19 were identified, resulting in the following:

  1. 51 cases from 2,495 samples taken during passenger screening at Larnaca and Paphos Airports.
  2. 426 cases out of 3,754 samples taken through private initiative.
  3. 15 cases out of 422 samples taken by the Microbiological Laboratories of General Hospitals.
  4. 1,655 cases from 56,424 samples tested by the antigen rapid test in private clinical laboratories and pharmacies.
  5. 956 cases out of 58,921 samples tested by the antigen rapid test through the Ministry of Health programme.
