The Ministry of Health announces that today, 1 January 2022:
- No patient deaths with COVID-19 as the final cause of death were recorded, and therefore the total number of deaths remains 638.
- 187 COVID-19 patients are hospitalized, of which 82 are in serious condition. A proportion of 85.03% of hospitalized patients have no history of vaccination.
- 16 post-COVID patients who ceased to be infectious (declassified cases) continue to be hospitalized intubated in serious condition due to COVID in an ICU.
- A total of 38,977 molecular (PCR) and antigen rapid tests have been performed.
- 2,332 (positivity rate: 5.98%) new cases of COVID-19 have been detected by the PCR and antigen rapid tests, bringing the total number of cases to 169,159.
Here are today's results in detail.
A. Deaths from COVID-19:
No deaths of patients with COVID-19 were recorded. Therefore, the total number of deaths with a final cause of COVID-19 disease remains 638, of which:
- 405 males (63.5%), and
- 233 females (36.5%).
The average age of deaths from the disease is 76 years.
B. Inpatients:
In total, 187 patients with COVID-19 are hospitalized in the hospitals of the OCYPY, of which 82 are in serious condition or in PICU.
Of the 82 patients in serious condition, 32 are intubated, 4 are hospitalized in an Intensive Care Unit (ICU) off ventilator and 46 in an Intensive Care Unit (ICU).

C. Positive cases COVID-19 (PCR test and antigen rapid test):
Of the 38,977 diagnoses performed, 8,525 were performed by the molecular method (PCR) and 30,452 by the antigen rapid test method, 2332 cases of COVID-19 were identified, resulting in the following:
- 57 cases from 4,674 samples taken during passenger screening at Larnaca and Paphos Airports.
- 388 cases out of 3,615 samples taken through private initiative.
- 21 cases out of 236 samples taken by the Microbiological Laboratories of General Hospitals.
- 1008 cases from 14,473 samples tested by the antigen rapid test in private clinical laboratories and pharmacies.
- 858 cases out of 15,979 samples tested by the antigen rapid test through the Ministry of Health programme.
