The Minister of Interior, Mr.Constantinos Ioannou, will participate in the work of the EU Internal Affairs Council, which will take place tomorrow, 4 March 2024, in Brussels. The 27 Ministers will discuss migration issues, with emphasis on the external dimension of migration and the implementation of the Action Plan for the Eastern Mediterranean.
The Minister of Interior, reiterating the serious problem faced by Cyprus and the other states in the Eastern Mediterranean due to the disproportionate migration flows, will reiterate the initiative of the Republic of Cyprus to reassess the status of Syria, according to the current situation in the country. The Cypriot Minister will underline the need to examine the evaluation of the body responsible for migration, the European Asylum Organisation, and on the basis of which a decision will be taken collectively and at political level in the European Union.
Finally, the Minister will reiterate the need for greater support for countries of origin and transit, in the framework of the Eastern Mediterranean Action Plan. The aim is to strengthen cooperation with these countries in order to achieve more effective border surveillance and management along the Eastern Mediterranean route, with the involvement of Europol.
Mr. Ioannou returns to Cyprus on Tuesday, 5 March 2024.
