Interior Minister Constantinos Ioannou is departing today for Ghent, Belgium, where he will participate tomorrow in the Ministerial Meeting on Asylum and Migration, organised on the sidelines of the Belgian Presidency of the European Union (EU). The 27 ministers responsible for migration issues will discuss the implementation of the Asylum and Migration Pact, while best practices of national strategies for the management of migration will be presented by some of the countries.

At the invitation of the organisers, Mr Ioannou will analyse the policy implemented by the Republic of Cyprus to strengthen the returns sector. The Cypriot Minister will refer to the package of measures adopted which have resulted in an increase in the total number of returns, which ranks our country first, in terms of population, among the Member States of the Union in terms of returns. It is recalled that in 2023, an increase of 66% was recorded in total migrant returns compared to 2022, while in the first quarter of 2024, the picture remains positive, with 1,000 more departures compared to the same period in 2023.

The Minister of Interior returns to Cyprus on Tuesday, April 30.
