[PIO] Minister of Foreign Affairs met with the Secretary of State of the United States of America

Foreign Minister Konstantinos Kombos met today, Monday, June 17, 2024, in Washington, DC, with the Secretary of State of the United States of America, Mr. During the meeting, which was held in a friendly and cordial atmosphere, the high level of Cyprus-US relations was confirmed and the launch of a Strategic Dialogue between the two countries was announced. Through the Strategic Dialogue, the framework for deepening and consolidating strategic cooperation between the Republic of Cyprus and the United States, both bilaterally and multilaterally, is being created. Annual high-level dialogues are also established on the basis of common themes and priorities.

In addition, the Ministers discussed the situation in the Middle East, focusing on the transfer of humanitarian aid to Gaza through the sea corridor. In this context, Mr Blinken thanked Mr Kombo for Cyprus' leading role in the implementation of the Amalthea Plan.

During the meeting, the Cyprus problem was also discussed, with the Foreign Minister stressing the will and commitment of our side to reach a solution of a bizonal, bicommunal federation, with political equality, as envisaged by the relevant UN Security Council resolutions. For his part, the US Secretary of State reiterated the US support for reaching a solution to the Cyprus problem within the framework of the United Nations.

Following the meeting, a bilateral agreement was signed between the Republic of Cyprus and the United States of America on cooperation in relation to the use of travel data. With the signing of this agreement, Cyprus moves one step closer to our country's accession to the US Visa Waiver Program.

The agreement was signed on behalf of the Republic of Cyprus by the Ambassador of the Republic of Cyprus in Washington, Mr. Evangelos Savva and on behalf of the US by the US Ambassador in Nicosia, Ms. Julie Fischer, in the presence of the Secretary of State, Mr. Julie Fischer. Constantinos Kobos and the US Assistant Secretary of State for European and Euro-Asian Affairs, Mr. James O'Brien.
