The Minister of Agriculture, Rural Development and Environment, Dr Maria Panagiotou, will travel to Athens tomorrow morning to participate in the 9th International "Our Ocean Conference" (OOC-9). The Conference, which will be held at the Stavros Niarchos Foundation Cultural Centre, is a leading global initiative for the protection and sustainable management of the oceans.

The Conference will host representatives of more than 120 countries, including Prime Ministers, Presidents, as well as Ministers and Deputy Ministers with responsibilities related to the environment and the oceans, as well as representatives of major international and regional organisations.

The Conference aims to foster cooperation among governments and stakeholders from around the world to mobilize, highlight perspectives and innovative ideas, and make commitments to ensure the sustainability of the oceans.

The focus of the Conference is on the commitment of states to transition to a "Blue Economy" in order to harness the benefits of a new balance between economic growth (development), social cohesion and sustainability, and to address some key challenges such as biodiversity loss, climate change, unsustainable fisheries, marine pollution, in particular from plastics, and unsustainable maritime transport.

The Minister's participation in the Conference is part of the broader effort of the Republic of Cyprus to promote sustainability and protect marine areas for future generations.

During the Conference, the Minister will participate in discussions covering issues such as ocean security, the green transition in the maritime sector and marine pollution management. In particular, the Minister will intervene on the issue of marine plastic pollution, an issue that is very important for Cyprus as an island.

Furthermore, in the framework of the 9th International Conference "Our Ocean Conference", the Minister of Agriculture, Rural Development and Environment will have a private meeting with her Greek counterpart, Minister of Environment, Energy and Climate Change, Mr Theodoros Skylakakis.

The two Ministers will discuss ways to strengthen bilateral cooperation between Greece and Cyprus on critical environmental management issues, while particular emphasis will be placed on waste management issues with emphasis on source separation, Natura 2000 sites, as well as their cooperation in view of the Cyprus Presidency of the Council of the European Union in the first half of 2026.
