It is with great pleasure that I am here today for the annual Green Flag Award to the schools that have successfully completed three consecutive years in the Eco-Schools Programme, this massively participatory sustainable development education programme, and I warmly congratulate all of you who are here today.
The Eco-Schools programme is embraced by Kindergartens, Primary Schools, Secondary Schools, High Schools and Technical Schools and gives children the impetus to participate in decision-making, planning and implementing initiatives, while being a valuable tool for educating and raising awareness on environmental issues, transforming schools into communities of sustainable living, on a pedagogical and, above all, on a practical level.
Students are invited to engage in tackling environmental problems at a level where they can see tangible results, making them realise that their everyday actions can really make a difference. Through the programme, critical thinking, environmental awareness and responsibility are developed, so that children can then choose a lifestyle with environmentally friendly habits and practices.
Due to the international nature of the programme, schools are also given the opportunity to exchange information and good practices related to environmental protection, and it becomes a means of cultural exchange with other schools around the world. At the same time, through the actions and interventions of the schools in the social and environmental events of their region, positive results are also expected in society.
The Office of the Environment Commissioner supports the Eco-Schools programme, which enhances the conservation and restoration of nature, promotes sustainable development, and equips children to be the change that a potentially sustainable society needs.
In conclusion, I would like to congratulate the pupils, teachers, and in general the school units implementing the programme. Your passion and enthusiasm are an inspiration for all of us.
I wish you good luck with your actions!
