The Speaker of the House of Representatives Ms. Anita Demetriou had a meeting today with the Chairman of the Public Service Commission (PSC) Mr. Georgios Papageorgiou.

During the meeting, Mr. Papageorgiou briefed the Speaker of the Parliament on the work of the Commission during the year 2022, delivering a copy of the Commission's Annual Report already served to the President of the Republic on September 1, 2023 for that year and analyzing at the same time the challenges facing the Commission, including the completion of the civil service reform before the end of this year. Particular reference was made by the President of the NEC to the interdepartmental promotion post of middle management level (Cl. A13) and the need to complete the process of drawing up new service plans for this grade in order to allow the full implementation of the reform from the year 2024, subject to their timely approval by the Parliament. Other issues within the remit of the PSC were also discussed, such as the need to preserve the institutional, constitutional role of the PSC and the establishment of merit-based evaluation and recruitment mechanisms for all first appointment positions in the civil service, through the promotion of a relevant draft law, which is pending before Parliament.

For her part, the Speaker of the House of Representatives assured the President of the PSC that the legislature fully understands the constitutional and important role of the PSC, in the context of the functioning of the public sector, and that it will contribute in every way to strengthen its role and thereby ensure the coherence of the public sector, with respect to the relevant constitutional provisions.
