The Speaker of the House of Representatives Mrs. Anita Demetriou received today a delegation of the Famagusta Municipality, led by the Mayor of Famagusta Dr. Simos Ioannou, as well as a delegation of Members of the House of Commons of the United Kingdom, the Greek Parliament and representatives of twinned municipalities of Greece, who are visiting Cyprus to attend the anti-riot event organised by the Municipality tomorrow, Saturday 3 August 2024.
From the House of Commons Mr. Roger Gale was present, from the Greek side, Mr. Mr. Ioannis Andrianos, the Member of Parliament of the Region of Argos, Ms. Nina Kasimatis, the Mayor of Nafplion Mr. Dimitrios Orfanos, the President of the Municipal Council of the Municipality of Corfu Mr. Xenophontas Alamanos, the Deputy Mayor of Public Health and Social Services of Piraeus Ms. Kyriaki Bourdakou, and the Deputy Mayor of Culture, Old Town and Commerce of the Municipality of Corfu Mr. Constantinos Vousolinos and other representatives of the two Municipalities.
The President of the Parliament welcoming the delegation noted that the participation of all representatives in the anti-communist event of the Municipality of Famagusta reaffirms the unreserved solidarity and practical support to our efforts for vindication, liberation and reunification of our homeland.

Ms Demetriou further stressed that we are going through an extremely difficult period, as Turkey is committing new flagrant violations of international law and UN Security Council Resolutions.
Congratulating the Municipality of Famagusta for its initiatives and actions, Ms Demetriou informed the delegation about specific actions and activities of the House of Representatives at the international level, in order to address the intensifying Turkish provocations against Cyprus and in particular the enclosed area of Famagusta. The Speaker of the House of Representatives stressed the need for unity, unanimity and coordination in order to make the international community fully understand that Turkey's threats and illegal actions do not only concern Cyprus, but increase tension and hamper efforts to achieve conditions of peace, stability and security in the wider Eastern Mediterranean region.
Roger Gale MP assured that the British Parliament supports the efforts of the Republic to resolve the Cyprus problem, stating that every assistance will be provided to restart the dialogue on the basis of the agreed framework. Andrianos and Ms Kasimatis, representing the Greek Parliament, expressed Parliament's support and readiness for the resolution of the Cyprus problem and the return of all refugees to their ancestral homes.
The representatives of the Greek municipalities twinned with Famagusta conveyed a message of solidarity and support to Cyprus, underlining the fraternal ties between Cyprus and Greece and stressing that all Greece is always a helper and companion in the struggle of the Cypriot people for vindication.
