The Minister of Labour and Social Insurance, Mr. Nicholas Schmit, the Head of the Representation of the European Commission in Cyprus Ms Myrto Zambarta and the social partners, during which the importance of social dialogue both as an integral part of the European social model and for the formulation of national labour policies was highlighted.
During the press conference, the Labour Minister stressed that the European Commission's orientation and efforts for a more social Europe converge with the corresponding orientation of the Government of the Republic of Cyprus, while making special reference to the great importance that the Ministry attaches to social dialogue. In this context, the Minister welcomed the tripartite declaration signed last Wednesday in Val Duchesse on a "fruitful European social dialogue". The Minister stressed that an effective social dialogue at EU and national level is and remains essential to achieve the common objectives we have collectively set.
The Minister stated in particular that: "With the European Commissioner for Employment, my friend Nicholas Schmit and our country's social partners, we discussed the value of social dialogue and the power of tripartite social cooperation. We exchanged views on Europe's challenges, the future of work and the prospects for the economy. Our country is geographically located at the south-easternmost edge of the European Union but is politically placed at the heart of the core of a Europe that is people-centred and social, productive and competitive. We agreed that to have a strong economy and a cohesive society we need cooperation, dialogue and mutual respect.
We gave the European Commissioner, as a souvenir, the first edition of the Code of Industrial Relations, the most important agreement between the social partners and our state. For more than 45 years, industrial peace has been based on respect for our agreements. And that is how we want to continue, for as many more years, so that we can evolve and grow. But above all to share fairly the fruits of that development and growth. So that we can be proud throughout Europe that we Cypriots know how to work together and move forward together."
Also in the context of Mr Schmit's visit to Cyprus, an event was held at the House of Europe on the theme: "Towards a People-Centred Social Europe", where the Minister of Labour and Social Security delivered a welcome address. In his address, the Minister referred to the great importance of the policies developed and contributing to the building of a strong social Europe, underlining the commitment of the Republic of Cyprus to strengthening social Europe through the implementation of people-centred government policy.
