The Minister of Education, Sports and Youth, Mrs Athina Michaelidou, had a meeting today at the Ministry with the Secretariat of the Organization of Greek Secondary Education Officers of Cyprus (OELMEK), during which issues related to the start of the school year were discussed.

After the meeting, the Minister in her statements to journalists said: "We had a meeting with the educational organisation OELMEK, in order to inform each other and exchange views on the start of the new school year.

I am pleased to say that the year begins with very few challenges and with very good omens. We discussed suggestions and ideas with OELMEK to have even better communication. I believe very much in continuous communication and cooperation with the educational organizations and this is proven by the many meetings we have with them.

I believe that this year we will also win the bet that requires the best possible public school, the improvement and upgrading of the quality of our educational system. We have talked about new programs, staffing, books, safety and health issues in our schools, as well as building issues.

I believe we are starting with the fewest possible problems. There and where issues arise we have indicated as a Ministry our readiness to address them. We stand by the schools, by the teachers, the students and the parents, in order to have the best possible conditions for teaching and learning.

We discussed the issue of air conditioners, which is an issue that has been a concern for schools for many years and we informed the OELMEK that it is our intention to start and continue the installation of air conditioners in classrooms as well, provided that certain criteria are met, mainly concerning the safety of children.

We discussed the issue of sex education, which is a module in the Health Education course.

We discussed the issue of sex education, which is a module in the Health Education course. I repeat that it does not change anything. For 12 years the subject has been taught regularly without any problems in pre-school and primary education, as well as in secondary schools. For this year the innovation is that six hours a year will be spent discussing with our adolescents about self-protection, safe use of the Internet, etc.

In conclusion, I would like to thank, once again, the educational organisations for their support, for their constructive contributions and to reiterate that we are here to offer for the benefit of our children," the Education Minister said.
