Defence Minister Michael Yiorgallas met today with his Armenian counterpart Suren Papikyan, who is on an official visit to Cyprus. The meeting reaffirmed the excellent relations between our countries and the historical ties between the two peoples.

The meeting also reviewed both the bilateral cooperation between Cyprus and Armenia and the trilateral cooperation between the two countries and Greece in the fields of defence and security, during which the common intention to further deepen them was confirmed. Papikyan referred extensively to the latest developments in Nagorno Karabakh and in particular to the recent joint statement between Armenia and Azerbaijan, which aims at achieving peace in the region.

Mr. Yiorgallas, after expressing our side's satisfaction with the joint statement of the two countries, confirmed the support of the Republic of Cyprus in the effort to settle the issue.

He in turn briefed the Armenian Defence Minister on the security situation in Cyprus and the latest Turkish provocations in the buffer zone.

During the meeting, the two Ministers had the opportunity to discuss developments in the Eastern Mediterranean region and the consequences of the humanitarian crisis in Gaza. Yiorgallas highlighted the role played by the Republic of Cyprus in contributing to the efforts to evacuate civilians and discussed the initiative to create a sea corridor to facilitate the transfer of humanitarian aid.

At the end of the meeting, the two Ministers made statements to the media.
