In the context of creating synergies and actions with University Institutions for the conclusion of Memoranda of Understanding for the benefit of the interned and resettled people living in our occupied villages, and the relatives of our missing persons, the Head of Humanitarian Affairs of Missing and Trapped Persons Ms. Anna Aristotelous had a meeting with the Rector of the University of Nicosia, Professor Filippos Pouyoutas. During the meeting, ways of developing cooperation were discussed in order to strengthen and expand knowledge, learning and education through university studies for these vulnerable groups of our fellow human beings, the provision of scholarships, but also the promotion of the humanitarian aspect of these issues in Cyprus and abroad in the context of enlightenment.
Rector Pouyoutas informed Mrs Aristotelous about the face-to-face and distance learning programmes offered by the University of Nicosia, as well as the professional programmes offered by the Intercollege. He also noted that the University, as part of its social work and in consultation with the Deans of the various Faculties, would consider various activities, including research projects, lectures and conferences that it could organise for the benefit of these particular groups of our fellow human beings.
Ms. Aristotelous thanked the Rector for his suggestions and the interest he showed in the humanitarian aspect of the drama of our missing persons from the Turkish invasion and occupation of 1974, as well as their relatives and the people living in our occupied villages under occupation, keeping them alive despite the difficulties and adversities. "Further education, knowledge and training" said Ms. Aristotelous, "offers better opportunities for professional rehabilitation for our interned and resettled people and at the same time the conferences, lectures, events and actions raise awareness and enlighten, reminding and highlighting the blatant violation of basic human rights of the citizens of Cyprus as a result of the occupation".
