The creation of climate-neutral and green communities is at the heart of the strategy of the Office of the Environment Commissioner Ms Antonia Theodosiou and is part of the Governance Programme of President Nicos Christodoulides for 2024, in particular the pillar concerning the green transition and the implementation of the Green Community. The aim of the programme is that, within 2024, communities and/or clusters of communities should become energy independent but also serve other environmental objectives.
In this context, following the visit of Environment Commissioner Ms. Antonia Theodosiou to the area of Tilliria and the meeting she had with the President of the Community Council of Kato Pyrgos, a meeting was held yesterday at the offices of the Environment Commissioner with the President of the Community Council of Pigenia Ms. Angeliki Philippou, representative of the Community Council of Pachyammou Ms.
During the meeting, issues concerning the transformation of Tilliria into a green, climate-neutral community as well as individual issues were discussed. Among other issues discussed were the improvement of two irrigation systems existing in the area, the construction of a central sewerage system, the creation of a temporary green spot until the creation of a permanent one, and the rehabilitation of the solid waste dumping site near the abandoned village of Agios Theodoros, projects which were started yesterday by the Water Development Department at the request of Tilliria. The issue of creating a photovoltaic park for the whole area and its future development was also considered. The difficulties and potential risks as well as the benefits of these proposals were also mentioned.
At the end of the meeting it was agreed that the transformation to a green, climate-neutral Tilliria would be put under the auspices of the Commissioner and that her Office would act as a coordinator for the implementation of the projects based on the final plan prepared by the consultant in cooperation with the Communities. The preliminary operational plan for the development of the communities has been submitted to Ms. Theodosiou for review and comments. The final plan will then be sent to the appropriate State agencies for review and adoption. Finally, it was agreed that a site visit by the Commissioner to the area and a meeting of all stakeholders will be arranged in the near future.
