Coordination ahead of the Cyprus Presidency of the European Union (EU) in 2026 was the focus of a meeting between the Deputy Minister of Social Welfare Ms Marilena Evangelou and the Deputy Minister of European Affairs Ms Marilena Raouna and officials of the two Ministries.
As the Deputy Minister of Social Welfare told CNA, coordination on European issues is imperative and concerns all Ministries and Deputy Ministries "first of all because we are a member state of the EU and we have to have active action and involvement in European events, co-shaping and following European policies, both by drawing and giving good practices, but also because of the upcoming Cyprus Presidency in 2026".
Ms Evangellou noted that in this context the meeting with the Deputy Minister for European Affairs took place, whom she informed in relation to the activities of the European Affairs Committee of the Deputy Ministry. The priorities of the Deputy Ministry of Social Welfare in relation to the Cypriot Presidency were also discussed, which touch upon issues concerning the whole social policy, as well as technocratic issues.
With regard to the lump sums to support single-parent families and other beneficiaries of the Child Benefit based on income and property criteria, which were decided by the Government in the context of support due to inflationary pressures, Ms Evangelou said that the Deputy Ministry of Social Welfare is currently paying the sums to the bank accounts of the beneficiaries.
It is recalled that beneficiaries are single-parent families with an annual income of up to 19,500 euros and a maximum deposit of 10,000 euros. The lump sum amounts to EUR 100 for the first child, increased by EUR 50 for each additional child, up to a maximum of EUR 250. Beyond four dependent children, an additional amount of EUR 100 is granted.
Beneficiaries of the above lump sum are also families receiving child benefit, with an annual income of EUR 25,000 and a maximum deposit of EUR 15,000.
Regarding the allocation of the one-off amount of 100 euros to households receiving Minimum Guaranteed Income that are not included in the above categories, the Deputy Minister of Social Welfare said that this will be paid within the current week and the reason is "because our computer systems need to be adjusted in order to distinguish those who will have received support from the above-mentioned benefits".
Ms Evangellou also referred to another measure to support single-parent families promoted by the Deputy Ministry of Social Welfare, which she said was announced a few days ago by the President of the Republic himself, Mr Nicos Christodoulides, during the event at the Presidential Palace for Women's Day. The measure in question concerns the amendment of the legislation so that the income of the spouse is not taken into account for the payment of the Single Parent Family Allowance.
"This is a request from Single Parent Families, which we have studied and agree with, responding to modern needs and requirements and we believe that this is a modernization of the legislation in a way that responds to today's challenges" said Ms. Evangellou.
