In the context of her contacts for the preparation of the Cyprus Presidency of the Council of the European Union (EU) in 2026, Deputy Minister for European Affairs Marilena Raouna met today with the President of the EPP, Marinos Sizopoulos, and a delegation of the party.
After the meeting, the Deputy Minister made the following statement to media representatives.
I would like to stress that the role of the parliamentary parties is particularly important in promoting the parliamentary dimension of the Presidency, which is why I look forward to our close cooperation in order to accomplish the national mission we have before us.
I had the opportunity to brief the President of the EPP and the party's delegation extensively on the progress of the preparations for the assumption of the Presidency of the Council of the EU by the Republic of Cyprus in the first half of 2026.
For your information, preparations are proceeding at an intensive pace by the Secretariat of the Cyprus Presidency of the Council of the EU, in close cooperation and coordination with all Ministries and Deputy Ministries. The Cyprus Presidency Secretariat has been established, as provided for by the relevant legislation, the inventory of the "inherited agenda", i.e. the dossiers that Cyprus is expected to be called upon to manage and the mapping of needs both in Cyprus and in Brussels. As far as the drafting of the Trio Presidency programme is concerned, together with Poland and Denmark, it is at an advanced stage. I would also like to stress that the consultation on the preparation of the programme and priorities of the Cyprus Presidency will also start later this year.
I listened attentively to Mr Sizopoulos' suggestions and assured him that I would provide regular updates on the progress of the preparatory work, including the formulation of the political priorities of the Cyprus Presidency.
Finally, I assured him of our country's determination to exercise the Presidency in a credible, serious and, of course, effective manner, as an Honourable Ombudsman, with the main objective of safeguarding the interests of the EU and all its citizens, promoting consensual solutions to the critical issues that the Union will have to deal with for the benefit of the Union and all its Member States and for the benefit of all European citizens."
