The migration issue, as well as the INTERREG Greece-Cyprus Cross-border Cooperation Programme, were the focus of a meeting today between the Minister of Interior Mr.
Mr Ioannou briefed Mr Stylianides on the Ministerial Meeting held in Nicosia on 17 May.
Mr Ioannou informed Mr Stylianides about the Ministerial Meeting held in Nicosia on 17 May. The two Ministers reiterated the importance of supporting countries of the Eastern Mediterranean region, particularly Lebanon, to strengthen their reception and accommodation systems for migrants in their countries, as well as the surveillance of their borders.
In addition, during the meeting, the INTERREG Greece-Cyprus Cross-border Cooperation Programme was discussed, the successful implementation of which has been the foundation for the development of cooperation between the two countries and has led to institutionalized cooperation to address the challenges in the context of managing migration flows. It is recalled that from the Cypriot side, the project delivered the upgrading of KEPY Pournara, with the creation of 48 functional prefabricated housing units with a capacity of up to 10 persons, six office spaces, two special prayer areas and a warehouse-kitchen. On the Greek side, the supply of high-powered floating ambulances (boats), as well as agricultural vehicles for emergency response in rugged areas, was implemented.
In the framework of the new programming period 2021-2027, a new application was submitted for the implementation of a new strategic project for the supply of two surveillance vehicles of van type with special operational capabilities equipped with radar, thermal cameras and telecommunication-electronic equipment.
The two Ministers reaffirmed the high level of cooperation between the two Ministries and agreed to explore additional synergies in order to increase the level of preparedness and response to the challenges presented at the operational level.
