The European Commission's Directorate-General for Competition has approved the Interest Rate Subsidy Scheme for Mortgage Loans taken out between 1 January 2022 and 31 December 2023 for the purchase or construction of a first home for families with an annual income of €50,000. The European Commission's Directorate General for Competition has considered that this Scheme does not contain any element of State aid, either to the participating credit institutions or to the natural persons who are the final beneficiaries and can therefore be implemented.
The necessary positive response from the Directorate General for Competition paves the way for the implementation of this very important Scheme which will provide relief to the beneficiaries. Taking targeted, meaningful measures to support households is at the heart of the Government's policies.
The Ministry of Finance is proceeding immediately with the next stages of implementing the Plan, which include informing credit institutions, signing relevant cooperation agreements, defining the procedure for reviewing and approving applications and to be implemented as soon as possible.
The Project will have an annual financial cost estimated at €20 million and the subsidy will be for a period of 2 years and will amount to 50% of the interest rate increase between the date of the loan agreement and the date of payment of the subsidy, with a maximum subsidy amount of 2 percentage points.
It is recalled that the beneficiaries of the Scheme are households with an annual family income of up to EUR 50,000 that have taken out a mortgage loan of up to EUR 400,000 during the period 1/1/2022 to 31/12/2023, provided that the loan is serviced.
