A lecture on "Building Trust and Conveying Truth: The Future of Politics in the Age of Disinformation and Artificial Intelligence" was held today at the amphitheatre of the Press and Information Office (PIO).

The speaker was Mr Louis Jacobson, senior correspondent at the US website PolitiFact, which assesses the accuracy of claims made by political figures.

Mr Jacobson was welcomed by Ms Aliki Stylianou, Director of the CTI, who noted that the lecture was part of the CTI's effort to keep up with developments in the field of communication, particularly with regard to preventing and combating the spread of fake news and misinformation.

In his presentation, Mr Jacobson referred to the ways in which the problem of misinformation is exacerbated by developments in the field of artificial intelligence (AI) and suggested ways of dealing with the phenomenon at a personal and broader societal level.

Specifically, he presented approaches and tools that any citizen or information worker can use for fact checking and investigating dubious claims circulating online that are widespread, impactful and potentially harmful to the public.
