On the occasion of the International Children's Day, June 1st, the Commissioner for the Protection of Children's Rights, the National Network Against Poverty in Cyprus (NCPN-Cyprus), the Pancyprian Coordinating Committee for the Protection and Welfare of Children (CCPCWC), the Cyprus Children's Council and SISTEMA Cyprus announce their decision that the year 2024 is dedicated to the fight against child poverty.
Child poverty is one of the most serious problems facing today's societies. The successive economic crises, the pandemic COVID-19, wars, poverty, the housing problem, high inflation, climate change, reductions in real wages and the living standards of workers have an impact on children all over the world, but also on children living in Cyprus.
At the same time that 1% of the world's population has accumulated more than 50% of the world's wealth, according to UNICEF and World Bank data, 330 million children on the planet live in conditions of extreme poverty and material deprivation. In the European Union, 1 in 4 children, i.e. 25%, live on the poverty line and social exclusion.
In Cyprus in 2022 the percentage of children at or below the poverty line was 18.1%, equivalent to about 31 thousand children, according to Eurostat data. The policies of successive governments, focused on the needs of adults and/or powerful social groups, ignore the protection and well-being of children and the safeguarding of their rights.
With this in mind, through the cooperation of the above-mentioned stakeholders, it was decided that in 2024 they will work together and carry out a series of joint actions to enlighten, inform and raise public awareness. The main and essential objective is to involve children themselves in the actions. In this context, a series of round table discussions will be held in order to draw conclusions and promote positions to the competent decision-making bodies and the relevant State agencies aimed at eliminating child poverty and the social exclusion of children. A parallel objective is to mobilize the state apparatus, institutions, municipalities and communities, organizations and citizens to fight child poverty.
We join our voices to be heard as loudly as possible and to ensure that every child in Cyprus has the opportunity to develop in an environment that provides him/her with the opportunities and conditions to live a dignified life and to develop to his/her maximum potential.

For a state where no child is left behind.
