The European Commission supports the Republic of Cyprus in preparing a gender-responsive state budget
The Republic of Cyprus has received the European Union's approval of its request for technical assistance in preparing a gender-responsive state budget. The request was submitted to the European Commission by the Ministry of Finance in cooperation with the Office of the Gender Equality Commissioner, through the Technical Support Instrument of the Directorate General for Structural Reforms Support
The implementation of a gender-responsive state budget is an action that demonstrates the extent to which equality between women and men is achieved in the context of horizontal gender mainstreaming in public policies. A gender budget is a budget that includes policies and actions on the basis of targeted planning and adequate statistical data, taking into account the gender and age groups of the population. The implementation of the project will be based on existing statistics on, inter alia, the labour force, people living on the poverty line, the pay and pension gap, as well as on statistics expected to be developed in the context of the new National Strategy for Gender Equality.
The implementation of the gender budget requires the restructuring of policies related to both revenue and expenditure of the state, recognizing the different needs of men and women, so that they benefit equally. The gender budget is an ambitious but necessary task. It aims to reduce poverty and inequalities on the basis of gender, to promote economic development and the equal participation of men and women in society and the economy.
