The Ministry of Education, Sports and Youth (MESY), in cooperation with the Cyprus Electricity Authority, announce that the Project for the installation of Photovoltaic (PV) Systems in 405 school buildings was completed and put into operation in the summer of 2023, following an agreement between them. The final progress report of the project, which includes the installation of PV systems with a total capacity of 4.9 MW, thermal insulation of approximately 84,000 square meters and waterproofing of the surfaces where the PV systems were installed, was delivered on 22 January 2024 to the Minister of Education, Sports and Youth, Ms. Athena Michailidou, by the President of the Board of Directors of AHK, Ms. Despina Panagiotou Theodosiou.

This is an agreement that is part of AHK's social and corporate responsibility and which, having led to a 30% reduction in total energy consumption in schools, also contributes to the implementation of one of the central pillars and objectives of the Authority, that of energy saving.

The project has been approved for EU funding under the Recovery and Resilience Plan (RSP). The funds for its implementation were provided by AHK, which will be gradually repaid by the Ministry of National Economy. The total cost of the project amounted to €6.6 million, The AHK project team has submitted all required data to the Ministry of Education and the General Directorate of Development (Ministry of Finance) for inclusion in the 2nd disbursement from the PDS.

The project was implemented with the support of all relevant authorities of the Republic. Particularly positive was the support of the Ministry of Energy, Trade and Industry, whose contribution ensured the approval by the Council of Ministers of a special plan that allows the installation of PV systems for the offsetting of increased power measurements (up to 20 kW) in school buildings.

Theodosiou said that "the goal of all of us is for Cyprus to enter the path of energy consciousness. Energy is a vital commodity and a practical contribution to energy saving is a social responsibility."

The project of installing PV systems in all schools is particularly important for both the Ministry of Education and AHK as well as for the society in general. Its completion achieves a major objective, that of saving electricity, public money and creating energy awareness among our young people, while the Project also contributes to the protection of the environment.
