In relation to the above issue and following relevant publications, the Ministry of Education, Sports and Youth (YPAN) clarifies that the Greek Language Attainment Programme aims at measuring and diagnosing the level of Greek language proficiency of newly arrived students with an immigrant background, who are enrolled and attending public primary schools in Cyprus and who do not have Greek as their first/native language. Through the Programme, an ainitial diagnostic assessment is carried out, with the aim of providing effective and targeted teaching where necessary.
The implementation of the Programme for initial diagnostic assessment concerns students who will be participating for the first time in a support programme for the learning of Greek as a second language and contributes to the adequate staffing of teaching staff. Based on the results, and as expected, 91.5% of these children will need to attend classes for learning Greek as a second language during the school year 2024-2025. Therefore, the necessary arrangements are being made to staff the schools with the appropriate teaching staff.
The implementation of the programme for the school year 2023-2024 involved a final diagnostic assessment for (a) students in grades B, C, D and E who have completed two years in the support programme for the learning of Greek as a second language and (b) students in grade 6, who either participated in a support programme for the learning of the Greek language for the first time or completed two years in the support programme or had completed the support programme for the learning of the Greek language in previous years, but had not achieved the necessary level in their previous assessments. Based on the results, 46.4% of the 2050 children who participated in the final assessment achieved level B1 of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages. Importantly, 80.4% of the 652 children who were reassessed in grade 6 achieved this level.
In conclusion, it is emphasized that the operation of an Interdepartmental Committee at the Ministry of Education for the smooth integration of pupils with an immigrant biography into our educational system and the implementation of a uniform curriculum for the learning of Greek as a second language from kindergarten to high school, combined with the utilization of the findings of the diagnostic assessments, ensure the consistency and continuity of the efforts made for a modern, democratic and inclusive school.
