Environment Commissioner Ms Antonia Theodosiou attended the meeting of the Parliamentary Committee on the Environment, on 10/01/2024, in the context of which the complaints about arbitrary interventions in a protected forest area in the community of Prastiou (Kellaki) were discussed.
In her intervention during the session, the Commissioner stated that it is necessary to have in the licensing documents a record of the existing topography, vegetation and trees, as well as photographs of the plots, especially considering the lack of obligation to consult on greenhouses with departments other than the relevant District Administration, according to a relevant decree of the Ministry of Interior.
In addition, the Environment Commissioner stated that tree felling should be carried out sparingly and if it is documented that it is absolutely necessary. She also stressed that such a drastic disturbance of the natural landscape would result in soil erosion.
Further, the Environment Commissioner states that she will investigate ways of early monitoring and prevention of the phenomena that have occurred, in the light of the complaints examined at this session (illegal logging, illegal excavations, clearing of vegetation without permission, encroachment on state land without a lease, illegal construction of outbuildings, keeping animals without permission and illegal construction of roads), following a proposal by the Chairman of the Parliamentary Committee, Mr.
