MP Alexandra Attalidou, member of the Cypriot delegation to the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU), participated yesterday in the Annual Parliamentary Meeting of the 66th Committee on the Status of Women, co-organised online by the IC and UN Women, on "The role of women's leadership and gender-responsive parliaments in climate action".

In her intervention, Ms. Attalidou noted that the 1995 Beijing Platform for Action established the link between gender, environment and sustainable development and identified the strategic role of women in decision-making processes on environmental issues. The consolidation of the role of women in climate decision-making and the parallel progress made on gender equality issues, Ms Attalidou said, contribute to effectively addressing the climate crisis.

Referring to the role of national parliaments in achieving environmental goals, Ms Attalidou stressed the importance of strengthening and complementing relevant legislation to include other Sustainable Development Goals, such as gender equality. The proactive adoption of policies aimed at the socio-economic empowerment and equal political participation of women, the Cypriot MEP stressed, can make a significant contribution to efforts to combat climate change, both at national and global level.

Stronger parliamentary commitment is needed, Ms Attalidou stressed, to ensure that climate action is linked to gender equality and to adopt environmental legislation and policies that promote the equal participation of women in decision-making centres.
