The work of the Bureau of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE) concluded yesterday in Copenhagen. OSCE) on the future of the Assembly in light of the growing instability in the current international security environment.
In his intervention on the situation in the Middle East, the Vice-President of the C.P. OSCE Special Representative for South-Eastern Europe, Kyriakos Hatzigiannis MP, pointed out that just as the impact of conflicts in the OSCE region affects the participating States as a whole, so the resolution of security challenges must be comprehensive and not piecemeal. In this context, he stressed that the Assembly has a duty to address the escalating conflict in the Middle East, which affects Europe, noting that the Mediterranean Forum has the potential to be a tool for further cooperation with the countries of the Eastern Mediterranean and the Middle East. Hatzigiannis referred to the important work carried out by the Ad Hoc Committee on Migration in relation to a wide range of issues of concern to countries in the region, including inter-state agreements for the return of third country nationals to their countries of origin, the effective prosecution of traffickers and the demonstration of solidarity with countries facing increased inflows.
Regarding the role of the OSCE, Hatzigiannis noted that the international organization's capacity to mediate in both ongoing and "frozen" conflicts, which can flare up at any time, should be strengthened. In this context, Mr. Hatzigiannis referred to the positive impact of the First OSCE CSO Inter-Parliamentary Forum on South-Eastern Europe, which provided an opportunity to exchange views on efforts for political, economic and social progress in the region and which was organized on his own initiative in his capacity as Special Representative of the Assembly for South-Eastern Europe.
Moreover, during the presentation of draft Resolutions of the three General Committees of the Assembly, Mr Hatzigiannis highlighted the role of the OSCE field missions, while noting the need to strengthen trust and cooperation in the region of South-Eastern Europe, expressing satisfaction at the launch of a political dialogue between Greece and Turkey. He recommended the inclusion in the text of references to the contribution of scientific diplomacy in promoting transnational cooperation, but also in addressing global challenges such as climate change, nuclear proliferation and artificial intelligence. Finally, Mr Hatzigiannis informed the Assembly about the tabling of a resolution on the Middle East with a view to the Annual Session of the OSCE CSO next June.
