The 31st Annual Session of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Organisation for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE PA) continues in Bucharest.

An amendment by Mr Hatzigiannis calls on the OSCE to develop mechanisms to mitigate the impact of the increase in hate speech, political polarisation, anti-Semitism and Islamophobia in the OSCE region. These phenomena, he said, dangerously deepen divisions and severely damage democracy and liberal societies. He stressed that there must be compliance with international law, which expressly prohibits the encouragement of any kind of discrimination, hostility or violence based on ethnic, racial or religious hatred.

In another amendment by Mr. Hatzigiannis, the OSCE CSC underlines the importance of the newly established Inter-Parliamentary Forum for South-Eastern Europe (IPFSE), with the aim of strengthening parliamentary and comprehensive cooperation between the countries of the Western Balkans. It reaffirms the Assembly's commitment to the fundamental principles of the OSCE, namely cooperation, dialogue and mutual respect, and expresses full support for the work carried out by the OSCE field missions in South-Eastern Europe. Noting the very successful first meeting of the IFNA in Tirana last March and the interest of many Parliaments to host the subsequent meetings, Mr. Hatzigiannis underlined the potential contribution of the Forum to the efforts for political, economic and social progress in the region. On the sidelines of the work of the Summit, a meeting of the delegations of South-East Europe was held on the initiative of Mr Hatzigiannis, during which the causes of demographic depopulation and the brain drain from the region of South-East Europe and the best possible ways to mitigate this phenomenon were discussed.
