During today's proceedings of the 1st part of the 2024 Session of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (PACE), MP George Loucaides participated in a meeting of the Assembly's Political Affairs and Democracy Committee. During the session, the Rapporteur on the topic "Call for the return of Famagusta to its legal inhabitants", Italian MP, Mr. Piero Fassino informed the Committee members about his recent working visit to Athens and his upcoming visit to Ankara.
The members of the Political Affairs and Democracy Committee also approved a second working visit of Mr. Fassino to Cyprus to take stock of the latest developments in relation to the enclosed city of Famagusta.
Mr. Loukaides refuted the arguments put forward by a Turkish Cypriot representative coming from the National Unity Party about the opening for development of the enclosed city of Famagusta and the claim of a "two-state" solution in Cyprus, stating that on the contrary, the opening and the planned settlement of the town, not only violate the relevant United Nations resolutions on Famagusta, which provide for the return of the town to its legitimate inhabitants, but even worse, they bury the prospects of a Cyprus settlement.
In conclusion, Mr. Loucaides expressed the hope that Mr. Fassino's report on Famagusta will be helpful to prevent the fait accompli that Turkey is creating in Famagusta and to strengthen the prospect of resuming negotiations for the resolution of the Cyprus problem on the basis of the agreed framework for a solution of a bizonal bicommunal federation.
