The Cyprus Academy of Sciences, Letters and Arts and the Cyprus Institute are co-organizing an International Conference on 26-28 September 2024 on the theme: "Climate Crisis in the Eastern Mediterranean and Middle East". The Conference is under the auspices of the President of the Republic of Cyprus, Dr. Nicos Christodoulides, who will address the opening session. The Conference will be preceded by workshops on 23-25 September, which will focus on specific issues related to the climate crisis.
The Eastern Mediterranean and Middle East region, with a population of more than 450 million, is at the centre of accelerating climate change. According to the most recent data and model projections, the region is experiencing escalating impacts in terms of intensity and duration, such as extreme weather events (e.g. heat waves and floods), increasing average temperatures, decreasing precipitation, rising sea levels. These phenomena cause chain effects on a global scale, such as economic hardship and mass migration, which need to be addressed urgently and urgently. The situation is further complicated by the fact that the region is facing serious political and economic crises and conflicts, and is composed of countries with different socio-economic and cultural backgrounds, factors that make the planning and implementation of the necessary adaptation measures a particularly difficult task.
The Conference will present and discuss measurements and model predictions on climate change and its impacts, particularly in the areas of energy, water, climate change and climate change. ways of mitigation, particularly in the economy, will be discussed, strategies for adaptation will be presented, especially at the regional level, and economic, legal and ethical aspects will be analysed, as well as artistic depictions of concern for this burning issue of the climate crisis.
The Conference is expected to receive international visibility, as it addresses a problem that is crucial for the future of humanity and at the forefront of global interest, and will involve leading figures in academia and policy-making who influence the decision-making process.
