Methodological information
Purpose and Coverage
The purpose of the Business Cycle Value Indices is to monitor the short-term developments of activities of the economy falling within Sections 45 (Trade and repair of motor vehicles) and 46 (Wholesale trade) of the statistical classification of economic activities NACE Rev.2 of the European Union. Turnover comprises the enterprise's sales of goods and services during the reference period, excluding VAT and including duties and taxes.
All enterprises employing 10 or more persons and a sample of smaller enterprises are covered.
Data collection
Data collection is carried out monthly by the Statistical Office, either by telephone interviews, fax or e-mail. It starts five days after the end of the period under review and is usually completed within 45 days.
Calculation Method and Publication Practices
The Indicators have a base year of 2015, i.e. they show the quarterly change in turnover compared to the average of the four quarters of turnover in 2015. In the base year, the average of the Turnover Indicators for the four quarters is 100.0. For example, if the Index for a quarter is 105.3 this means that turnover for that quarter increased by 5.3% compared to the average of the quarters in 2015. Indicators are expressed in current market prices.
To compile the overall Index at Sector level, the weighted average of the individual indicators is calculated for the different groups (subsets of activities of the Sector) as defined in the NACE Rev.2 classification.
To compile the overall Index at Sector level, the weighted average of the individual indicators is calculated for the different groups (subsets of activities of the Sector) as defined in the NACE Rev.2 classification. The coefficients used for the weighting are derived from the results of the annual Wholesale and Retail Trade Survey in the base year (2015) and reflect the share of turnover of each group in relation to the total turnover of the activity of the Sector.
The compilation of the indicators is carried out in the framework of the implementation of Regulation (EU) 2019/2152 on European business statistics. The Indicators sent quarterly to the Statistical Office of the European Union (Eurostat) include their corrected forms (seasonal and calendar correction). Only the uncorrected version is published on the website of the Statistical Office.

The Predefined Tables in Excel format include data up to the fourth quarter of 2022. For the first quarter of 2023 and thereafter, updates will only be made to the CYSTAT-DB Database.
