[PIO] Increased participation of sheep and goat milk in the production of PDO halalouli

The Ministry of Agriculture, Rural Development and Environment (MDAE), assessing the data concerning the production of goat and cow milk for 2022, has recommended to the Minister of Energy, Trade and Industry to increase the participation of goat and sheep milk in the production of Protected Designation of Origin (PDO) halalumi. Based on the declarations of the cheese producers regarding the quantities per type of milk they process, the possibility of increasing the percentage of sheep and goat milk for the production of PDO halloumi for the period September - January to 19% from the current 10%, and maintaining the corresponding percentage for the period February - November at 25%.

The modification of the milk percentages for the production of PDO halloumi is expected to enter into force on 20 October 2023 with the issuance of a relevant Decree by the Minister of Energy, Trade and Industry based on the current legislation, and will be effective immediately.

To ensure strict compliance with the revised milk percentages used for the preparation of the product, it is the intention of the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry to intensify controls related to the production and marketing of the product in all cheese dairies producing PDO halloumi.

YΓAP's objective is to safeguard the registration of the PDO halloumi (halloumi) / hellim designation as being of primary importance for the agricultural economy of our country, since it is a unique product with special quality characteristics, which has real added value for all those involved in the production and distribution chain.
