The Minister of Justice and Public Order, Mr Marios Hartsiotis, inaugurated today the new Centre for the Guidance and Extracurricular Employment of Prisoners.

The opening of the Centre, which will be able to accommodate up to 36 prisoners, is part of the package of measures adopted and promoted by the Government to address the chronic and serious problem of overcrowding in prisons.

Already, since last February, the new open prison that can accommodate up to 60 prisoners has been created and put into operation, while around the end of next September the new closed wing of the prisons that can accommodate up to 240 prisoners will be delivered. It is noted that within this month, the second phase of the projects, expected to be completed in 2027, will be submitted for approval by the Council of Ministers and will include the creation of a new wing of the Prison with a capacity of 360 places.

With the completion of both phases of the projects, in which special provision has been made to meet the educational, therapeutic and support needs of prisoners, the Prison will be able to accommodate 1,200 people. It is expected that this will lead to a definitive de-escalation of the overcrowding problem.

The Centre inaugurated today accommodates prisoners who are detained in the Open Prison, and who are selected by the competent committee for employment, or attendance at secondary or higher education schools outside the Prison.

The Minister of Justice and Public Order in his speech at the opening ceremony thanked the Prisons Directorate for its efforts to reform and enhance the social reintegration of prisoners. He also thanked all the relevant public authorities for their cooperation to enable the completion and delivery of the project inaugurated today.
