The second Civil Defence Response Station in rural communities of the Limassol District was inaugurated today by the Ministry of Interior, as part of the continuous effort to increase the readiness of the Civil Defence Force and its more effective response. The new station is located in the Finiou Community and the inauguration was performed by the Director General of the Ministry of Interior Dr. Elikkos Ilias. It is recalled that the first Civil Defence Response Station operates in Kyperounda.

The climate crisis has led in recent years to the occurrence of extreme weather events. In Cyprus we experience every year an increased number of fires with devastating environmental, economic and social consequences. Of crucial importance in such cases is the timely response and the active participation of Local Authorities in the prevention and response to natural disasters, which has proven in the past to be a decisive factor in their effective management.

In this context, the Government of Nicos Christodoulides has placed high among its priorities the holistic reorganization of the Civil Defence Force and its transformation into a Civil Protection Directorate. The aim of the project is to upgrade and modernize the civil protection services, through better coordination between the relevant services, in order to deal more effectively with emergency situations.

The station in the Community of Finiou is staffed by trained volunteers, permanent residents of the Community, who will be able to respond and go directly to the scene of the incident with a fire engine of the Civil Defence. Volunteers are trained not only in firefighting, but also in responding to earthquakes, floods and other natural and technological disasters, as well as in searching for missing persons.

The Ministry of Interior is particularly grateful to the stakeholders and residents of the Finio community for their cooperation and support in the implementation of the project, which is expected to contribute to the protection of the community and the surrounding areas.
