The Ministry of Interior welcomes yesterday's vote by the European Parliament on the European Union's Pact on Immigration and Asylum. The package of 10 pieces of legislation gives Member States the tools to implement more effective policies to manage migration and, most importantly, is a practical application of solidarity as a fundamental principle of the Union.
After years of discussions, the final text of the Pact establishes a common legislative framework for the 27 Member States, and establishes procedures for, among other things, the reception and relocation of migrants, faster processing of asylum applications, stricter legal procedures and penalties for migrant traffickers, as well as ways to manage crises.
The Cypriot Government, through its approach to migration, has implemented a series of measures over the past year which have resulted in a decrease in arrivals and an increase in returns of migrants. In addition, targeted steps have been taken to reduce the processing time of asylum applications to a maximum of three months, while efforts are now focused on further shortening the decision time within 30 days.
In conclusion, although for the Republic of Cyprus the option of voluntary relocation is not the most ideal decision, the Pact on Immigration and Asylum is still an extremely important step, especially for those countries on the front line and under disproportionate pressure.
