The member of the Parliamentary Committee on Foreign and European Affairs, Mr. Christiana Erotokritou participated in the Meeting of the Chairpersons of the European Affairs Committees of the Parliaments of the European Union (COSAC) in Budapest

The work of the COSAC Chairpersons' Meeting, which took place today in Budapest within the framework of the current six-month Presidency of the Council of the European Union (EU). The House of Representatives was represented by Christiana Erotokritou, member of the Parliamentary Committee on Foreign and European Affairs.

In her intervention during the discussion of the priorities of the Hungarian Presidency of the Council of the EU, Ms Erotokritou said that the issue of dealing with the ongoing war in Ukraine is rightly included in the priorities of the Hungarian Presidency. The EU's support for Ukraine must remain firm and unwavering, she said and underlined that the invasion of a sovereign country and the use of force have no place in the set of principles and values of the Union. If we allow any discounts to be made on European principles and values, she pointed out, it means putting the EU itself in a position of compromise on the very principles it stands for, which must not happen under any circumstances.

The Cypriot MEP also pointed out that the crisis in the Middle East region must be addressed immediately, as the Middle East is not far from the EU and recalled that the war in Syria in 2011 was the trigger for the biggest refugee crisis in the EU's wider neighbourhood. I am proud of my country, she stressed, since humanitarian aid is being sent to Gaza through the sea corridor opened for this purpose, on the initiative of the Republic of Cyprus and on the basis of the Amalthea Plan.

Concluding her speech, Mrs Erotokritou referred to this year's 50th anniversary of the Turkish invasion and continued occupation of Cyprus. She underlined that, according to the principles of the Union, an invasion is an invasion whether it took place in Ukraine in 2022 or in Cyprus in 1974 and therefore, the EU must never accept violations of international law and its principles and values, nor apply a two-measure, two-stop policy.
