The Chairman of the Committee on Foreign and European Affairs participated in a trilateral online meeting with the Chairman of the Parliamentary Committee on Foreign Affairs and Defence of the Knesset and the Chair of the Standing Committee on National Defence and Foreign Affairs of the House of Representatives

An online meeting of the Parliaments of Cyprus was held today, Greece, Israel, at the level of the Chairmen of the Committees responsible for foreign affairs, which was attended by the Chairman of the Parliamentary Committee on Foreign and European Affairs, Mr. Mr. Harris Georgiades, the Chair of the Standing Committee on National Defence and Foreign Affairs of the Hellenic Parliament Mrs. Dora Bakoyannis and the Chair of the Knesset Foreign Affairs and Defence Committee Mr. Yuli-Yoel Edelstein.

During the meeting it was stressed that, in the light of the current crisis in the Middle East and the dangers for the security and stability of the entire region, the trilateral inter-parliamentary cooperation between Cyprus, Greece and Israel becomes even more necessary and useful for the purpose of exchanging views to address common challenges. The added value of parliamentary diplomacy in serving the ultimate goal of ensuring regional peace and stability was underlined.

Georgiades stressed the importance of maintaining cooperation with the countries of the wider region and the revival of the Abraham Accords in this context. He underlined the need for the European Union to play a more active role in this regard, as well as the importance of maintaining the US commitment to the region. Georgiades noted that the military route cannot be the only possible option to achieve a sustainable solution to the current crisis and stressed the crucial role of diplomacy, including its parliamentary dimension, in building lasting peace and stability.

Finally, the Chairmen of the three Committees expressed their common will to hold a face-to-face meeting to continue and further deepen the dialogue and cooperation between them to promote these objectives.
