The President of the House of Representatives will participate in the Conference of Speakers of the Parliaments of the Member States of the European Union, the Meeting of Women Speakers of Parliaments and a joint meeting of the Speakers/Vice-Presidents of the Parliaments of the Southern Member States

The Speaker of the House of Representatives, Mrs. Anita Demetriou is going to Palma de Mallorca tomorrow to participate in the Conference of Presidents of the Parliaments of the Member States of the European Union (EU), which will take place between 21 and 23 April 2024.

The Conference of Presidents will address the issue of the "Strategic autonomy of the EU in the face of new challenges for liberal democracies in the age of social media and artificial intelligence, in relation to foreign and defence policy: Russia's illegal invasion of Ukraine and the conflict in the Middle East' and 'Strengthening the EU from an economic and social perspective: the new EU financial rules and strengthening the Economic and Monetary Union in the context of the enlargement perspective, social rights and environmental and climate challenges'. The Conference will conclude its work with the adoption of Conclusions.

In the framework of the Conference, the President of the Parliament will inform her counterparts about the increased flows of Syrians from Lebanon to Cyprus. In addition, at the initiative of the President of the Parliament, a joint meeting of the Presidents/Vice-Presidents of the Parliaments of the Southern Member States (Cyprus, Greece, France, Italy, Italy, Spain, Portugal and Malta) with the participation of the European Parliament will be held on the same issue on the sidelines of the Conference, during which the President of the Parliament will exchange views on the possibility of taking joint action on this issue.

On Sunday, 21 April 2024, Ms Demetriou will participate in a Meeting of Women Speakers of the Parliaments of EU Member States, where the main topic of discussion will be women's leadership.

Finally, Mrs Demetriou will also have private meetings with the President of the Danish Parliament Mr Søren Gade Jensen and the President of the Czech Senate Mr Miloš Vystrčil.

The President of the Parliament will return to Cyprus on Wednesday morning, 24 April 2024.
