Ms Erotokritou said that the Council of Europe plays an important role in preventing conflicts and promoting peace and the principles and values of the Organization, namely democracy, the rule of law and human rights. Conflicts in the Council of Europe area, and in particular the war in Ukraine, had prompted a strong reaction from the Organisation and the adoption of measures, but had failed to prevent the outbreak of new conflicts. The case of Nagorno-Karabakh, he pointed out, unfortunately demonstrates that the international community acted too late and too little. For this reason, she stressed that the role of the Council of Europe must be strengthened in order to restore the credibility of the organisation at all levels and especially in the eyes of European citizens.
Ms Erotokritou referred to the recent Reykjavik Summit, underlining the importance of implementing its conclusions, especially in addressing the democratic regression observed in many Member States. Furthermore, she stressed that the Council of Europe must hold Member States accountable in cases of violations of international law, failure to implement the decisions and recommendations of its institutions, in particular those of the European Court of Human Rights.
