Intervention by Mr. George Loukaidis at the Plenary Session of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe on the role of the Council of Europe in conflict prevention , regaining the credibility of international organisations and promoting world peace

In the context of the work of the Fourth Part of the 2023 Session of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (PACE), MEP Mr. George Loucaides, on behalf of the Political Group of the European United Left, participated yesterday in a plenary debate on the role of the Council of Europe in preventing conflicts, regaining the credibility of international organisations and promoting world peace.

Referring to the important role of the Council of Europe as the guardian of human rights, Mr. Loucaides underlined that despite its value and usefulness, the Organization is an integral part of a multilateral international system, whose functioning serves the selfish interests of states and the profits of the few rather than world peace, humanity and social well-being. He further expressed the assessment that as long as the logic of two measures and two stations prevails and many cases of violation of international law are tolerated, the goal of peace will continue to be undermined, the authority and effectiveness of international organisations will be eroded and conflicts between states will be revived and escalated.

The Cypriot MP also referred to the importance of respecting the international legal order and the independence, sovereignty and territorial integrity of states, while rejecting the imposition of the law of the strong and the promotion of neo-colonial interventions in third countries. On the contrary, he stressed, the strengthening of multilateralism, international diplomacy and the use of dialogue to resolve conflicts are becoming necessary conditions for consolidating peace and addressing challenges, including the nuclear threat.
