The Cyprus Organization for Standardization (CYS) had the honour to host the elected President of the European Committee for Electrotechnical Standardization (CENELEC) Mr. Riccardo Lama in Cyprus from 10 to 13 June 2024.

During his stay, Mr. Lama met with key stakeholders of the Electrotechnical Standardization and Energy sector in Cyprus. The meetings were aimed at informing Mr. Lama about Cyprus' actions and projects in the sector, with emphasis on innovative initiatives and efforts to promote best practices, implementation of standards, as well as the challenges faced by stakeholders.

On 11 June, a meeting was held at the CYS premises with the CYS administration and management as well as with representatives of key players in the energy sector in Cyprus. During the meeting, Cyprus' actions and projects in the sector were presented and the challenges related to harmonisation with European and international standards, their application to business practices in Cyprus and the need for continuous adaptation due to rapid technological developments were discussed.

On 12 June, at the premises of the Federation of Employers and Industrialists (FEB), Mr. Lama met with the leadership of the FEB, as well as with professional associations and national representatives of CYS participating in the CENELEC European Technical Committees. Mr. Lama presented CENELEC's actions and objectives arising from the European Standardization Strategy 2030 and underlined the importance of harmonized standards in support of European legislation. This was followed by a discussion with the liaisons on the challenges they face in implementing standards at national level. The importance of active participation of all stakeholders in the standardization process, especially SMEs, was stressed, as well as the need for continuous information and education of stakeholders on the new standards.

Later, Mr. Lama had an informal meeting with the Minister of Energy, Trade and Industry, Mr. George Papanastasiou. The discussion with the Minister focused on Cyprus' energy development model, renewable energy production and the role of standards in achieving quality results in line with international environmental and climate challenges.

Mr. Lama expressed his admiration for the dynamism and substantial presence of CYS in European Standardization, as well as for the active involvement of professional associations, academic institutions and engineers in the sector. Mr. Lama's visit was an important opportunity for the exchange of views and positions, as well as for the strengthening of cooperation between European and Cypriot stakeholders in the electrical engineering and energy sector.

The European official left with the best impressions as a result of his visit, which satisfies CYS and gives it additional encouragement to continue implementing its mission in favour of improving the quality of life in the country, society, industry and citizens.
