Discharges of inpatients from General Health System (GHS)

In 2021, 89,357 discharges were given to inpatients, i.e. patients who stayed in a hospital for at least one night. Of these discharges, 46.0% were from hospitals of the State Health Services Organization (SHSO), while 54.0% were from private hospitals contracted with the GHS.

The largest number of inpatient discharges was from the specialty of obstetrics and gynecology with a rate of 15.7%. This was followed by the specialties of General Surgery with 14.9%, Pathology with 12.1%, Cardiology with 11.4% and Orthopedics with 9.1%. The term specialty refers to the specialty of the physician who submitted a claim for the case. It should be noted that only one claim can be submitted for each discharge, exclusively by the physician assigned to the case, regardless of whether during the hospitalization the patient received health care services from physicians of other specialties.


According to the diagnosis at discharge, diseases of the respiratory system and diseases of the circulatory system recorded the same rate of 12.7%, followed by neoplasms with a rate of 11.7%, diseases of the digestive system with 11.1%, pregnancy, childbirth and maternity with 10.5%, diseases of the genitourinary system with 9.4% and wounds, poisoning and other external causes with 9.2%.

Discharges of Day Patients from Hospitals Contracted to the General Health System (GHS)

In 2021, 231,109 discharges were given to day patients, i.e. patients who were admitted to a hospital, treated and discharged on the same day. Of these discharges, 62.7% were from hospitals belonging to the SHS, while 37.3% were from private hospitals contracted with the SHS.


In terms of discharges by physician specialty, the largest percentage, 50.1%, was in the specialty of Nephrology, followed by Pathological Oncology with 14.5% and Hematology with 7.5%.


Outpatient visits

In 2021, there were 7.202,579 outpatient visits compared to 6,016,478 in 2020, an increase of 19.7%.

Of the total visits made in 2021, 951,872 (13.2%) were made in the outpatient clinics of hospitals and health centers under the OCYPY and 6,250,707 (86.8%) in private sector physicians under contract with the GESY.

Regarding the medical care provider, of the outpatient visits to personal physicians, 14.3% involved visits made to hospitals and health centers of the OCYPY, while the remaining 85.7% involved visits to private physicians contracted with the GESY. The corresponding percentages for 2020 were 16.8% and 83.2%.

Of the outpatient visits to specialists, 12.3% involved visits to hospitals and health centres of the OCYPY, while the remaining 87.7% involved visits to private physicians contracted to the GESY. The corresponding percentages for 2020 were 15.9% and 84.1%.

Deaths by Cause of Death

In 2021, 7.326 deaths of Cyprus residents and visitors, which occurred in Cyprus, have been recorded. 53.1% (3,889 deaths) involved men and 46.9% (3,437 deaths) involved women. The main causes of death were diseases of the circulatory system (25.4%), neoplasms (22.6%), diseases of the endocrine glands, nutrition and metabolism, as well as COVID-19 (8.5%) and diseases of the respiratory system (7.2%). The other causes of death followed with lower percentages.

Methodological information

Definitions

Inpatient - A person who has passed all procedures for admission to a hospital and for whom a "Patient File" has been prepared and who has remained in the hospital for care for at least one night.

Day patient - A person who has passed all procedures for admission to an inpatient facility and for whom a "Patient Record" has been prepared and who was admitted and discharged on the same day.

Discharge or Discharge - Is the completion of a period of medical care as an inpatient or day patient, regardless of whether the patient returned home, was sent to another hospital, was discharged against medical advice, or passed away.

Outpatient visit - is a visit by a patient to an outpatient department of a hospital or clinic or to a dispensary.

Data Sources and Coverage

Coverage. From June 2019, the implementation of the GHS started in the first phase at the level of primary care (outpatient visits) and then in June 2020, the implementation of the GHS was extended to inpatient care. In this press release, we present data on primary and inpatient care from all hospitals and clinics contracted to the GESY, both in the SHI and in the private sector. Data refer to the areas controlled by the State.

Inpatient and day patient discharges: Data on patients admitted for treatment and discharged from hospitals contracted with the GHS come from the Health Insurance Agency (HIA) system.

Outpatient visits: Data on outpatient visits made to all hospitals and physicians contracted with the GIS are derived from the Health Insurance Agency (HIA) system.

Causes of death: The source for deaths by cause is the Cause of Death File of the Health Monitoring Unit of the Ministry of Health. The total number of deaths recorded in the Causes of Death File includes all deaths that occurred in Cyprus (residents and visitors) and deaths of Cyprus residents that occurred abroad.
