Since the Republic of Cyprus joined the European Union (EU) in 2004, Cyprus as a full member of the Union has been participating in the European Schools (ES) network, a network of educational institutions established and operating in the EU Member States, jointly controlled by the governments of the EU Member States and aimed mainly at children of staff of the European institutions. The mission of the ES is to provide a multilingual and multicultural education for nursery, primary and secondary school pupils. The Schools follow a specific curriculum and offer the European Baccalaureate, which is recognised by all Member States. There are currently 13 ES in six EU countries with a total of around 28,750 pupils.

According to the Statute of the ES, the High Council, on which all Member States are represented, is responsible for overseeing the functioning of the ES institution and is chaired on a rotating basis by all Member States for a period of one school year.

Cyprus will assume the Presidency of the ES for the first time in the school year 2024-2025 (1 August 2024-31 July 2025), thus participating in the so-called "Trio Presidency" from August 2023 to July 2026, with Italy (2023-2024) preceding the Cyprus Presidency and Latvia following (2025-2026).

The handover ceremony of the Cyprus Presidency of the EC will take place on Friday, 21 June 2024, at 10:00 a.m. at the Hilton Hotel in Nicosia, in the presence of the Minister of Education, Sports and Youth, Dr Athina Michaelides. According to the protocol, the ceremony will be attended by the Secretary General and the Deputy Secretary General of the European Schools, as well as delegations from Italy and Latvia.
