It is with great pleasure that I am visiting the Headquarters of the Fire Service today, on the one hand to meet you on the occasion of my assumption of office as Minister of Justice and Public Order and on the other hand to be informed about the actions and the work you are carrying out.

Work which, over the years, through your actions and through the very difficult incidents and situations which you have been called upon to manage, as well as your participation in missions abroad, largely reflects the high level of your professional training, your professionalism and your high sense of responsibility and commitment.

The State has entrusted you with the safeguarding of the particularly critical sector of fire protection and fire safety in the country, a sector which, in a constantly changing environment with technological and other developments, makes your role even more important and at the same time more difficult, more demanding and more dangerous.

The phenomenon of climate change is leading to increasingly serious and devastating consequences, both in terms of the frequency and intensity of fires and the occurrence of extreme weather events.

And it is for this very reason that the Government has placed very high on its priorities the creation of a National Civil Protection System, which is able at all times to respond in a timely and effective manner to protect and save human lives and safeguard the property of citizens.

The Fire Service is a very important immediate response service and your timely intervention in incidents to which you are called, whether they involve extinguishing fires or rescuing persons as a result of man-made or other natural disasters or extricating injured persons from road accidents, is vital for the protection and rescue of human lives first and foremost, but also property.

Although I have only been at the Ministry of Justice and Public Order for a few days, I have been well informed about the actions and projects promoted by the Fire Service and I must admit that I am quite satisfied with the work you are doing. Of course, you have already set the bar high. By extension, I in turn have high expectations of the Fire Service, which I am convinced will be met.

You can be sure that you will have the full support of the Ministry of Justice and Public Order and me personally in carrying out your work and mission. I will do my utmost to contribute to the further upgrading and modernization of the Fire Service.

In a few months we will enter the new fire season, a period which is expanding year by year and the risks of large and destructive fires are becoming ever greater. Timely preparation, proper operational planning and the taking of all appropriate preventive measures in cooperation with all relevant services are crucial to prevent the outbreak of major fires.

I therefore invite you to prepare yourselves properly so that you will always be able to achieve the highest possible degree of operational readiness, ready to respond successfully to the new requirements of our time, always close to the citizens of our country.

Thank you.
