It is with great pleasure that I accepted your invitation to welcome today's Journalists' Conference on the occasion of the Pancyprian Nutrition Day. The 10th of May has been designated as the Pancyprian Nutrition Day and aims to enlighten the public through various activities of the Association of Cyprus Dietitians and Nutritionists in collaboration with the Ministry of Health.

This year, the theme of the Pancyprian Nutrition Day is "Love Our Body: A Sense of Conscious Eating". The main messages of the Pancyprian Nutrition Day are about raising awareness about eating disorders and their prevention through a conscious way of eating.

Conscious eating is a practice applied in Dietetics and Nutrition that aims to plan our meals and essentially asks us to think logically about the reasons that lead us to consume certain foods at certain times.

How, when, where and why we eat are as important as what we eat. When we reflect on why we make certain food choices, we have time to consider the pros and cons of our choices and ultimately begin to eat more consciously and, by extension, more healthily.

This new practice has been scientifically linked to combating Eating Disorders such as Anorexia Nervosa, Bulimia Nervosa and Compulsive Overeating

To do this we need to identify the differences between physical and psychological hunger. Be aware of the present, i.e. the moment we are eating or want to eat, and pay attention to the effect of food and our senses when we eat. These are all characteristics of mindful eating.

Friends,

Through this month's activities, we will be encouraged to enjoy our food mindfully for the benefit of our bodies and our health.

Overall health is achieved when we take time to use all five senses to appreciate the total experience of eating. We can achieve this by eating slowly while avoiding eating in front of the TV, computer or mobile phone.

A healthy lifestyle is not just about choosing to eat low-calorie foods in small quantities. It is the conscious choice of foods according to each person's health status and nutritional needs. Dietitians, nutritionists and clinical nutritionists are the competent health professionals who will educate and guide you to make appropriate dietary choices according to your tastes and preferences.

I once again welcome the organisation of both today's conference and the activities that will follow and hope that we all enjoy the taste of food by consciously eating healthily.
